Education Director Position

Temple Emanu-El of Honolulu, in the lush Nu’uanu Valley on the island of Oahu, is seeking an energetic and innovative educator to serve as its new Director of Education.

This part-time position builds upon our program’s strong foundation of holistic Judaic education, based on an exciting and immersive, experiential methodology. Our Jewish Experience Center (JEC) includes programs for Early Childhood, grades K-7, B’nei Mitzvah training, post B’nei Mitzvah (Madrichim) leadership training, youth group and Confirmation. Our focus is to expose and deepen students’ knowledge and understanding of core Jewish values, culture, history, holiday observance, and the Hebrew language.

The Director is under the direct supervision of the Temple’s Executive Director. The Director of Education works in collaboration with the Rabbi, Education Committee, Board of Trustees and JEC faculty. Partnership and relationship building with parents, Temple Sisterhood and the greater congregation is vital. In addition, the Director will communicate and collaborate with our unaffiliated on-site preschool, Jump Start, to facilitate continuity of Jewish experience for interested families.

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee administration, management and budgeting of the Jewish Experience Center
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate JEC faculty, youth group advisors and Madrichim
  • Maintain effective written and verbal communication with parents and cultivate school volunteers
  • Monitor, evaluate and revise as needed, established curriculum for pre-kindergarten through grade 12
  • Conduct energetic and proactive outreach to new and unaffiliated Jewish families with young and school-aged children to enhance and grow the JEC and Temple communities
  • Develop, implement and participate in youth/family programming for Jewish holidays and selected Temple events
  • Instruct in classes when necessary
  • Encourage representative (Director, faculty or volunteer parent) from JEC to have a presence at Friday Shabbat services, holiday services, and new member events

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree or higher (preference to Education and related fields)
  • Minimum 3 years experience as a school director, Jewish educational leader and/or director of congregational learning
  • Demonstrated experience engaging students of varying ages, behavioral skills, and abilities, including non-typical learners
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in written and spoken English
  • Proven ability to work successfully with educational and community stakeholders (parents, teacher, synagogue staff, congregants, etc.)
  • Excellent organization and time management skills; ability to perform duties independently, reliably and punctually
  • Solid foundation of Jewish knowledge or ability to learn quickly with guidance
  • Ability implementing and incorporating current technology and social media for student instruction, family communication and staff coordination
  • Experience monitoring and managing budgets
