OVERVIEW

Temple Emanu-El is a vibrant and welcoming congregation located at 2550 Pali Highway,  Honolulu. We are dedicated to providing a meaningful and engaging space for our community  to gather, worship, and celebrate. Our Reform Judaism temple is a hub of religious, educational and social activities. We are committed to supporting our School of Jewish Studies and a broad  range of programs and initiatives that engage our 200 member units of every age, life stage, and background. 

 

Temple Emanu-El was established in 1938 and our building opened in 1960. The facility consists  of a sanctuary, social hall, stage, library, kitchen, offices, gift shop, and the two-story Weinberg  Learning Center. The Temple Executive Director serves as the full-time day-to-day lead staffer of the synagogue. We are seeking an experienced, organized and compassionate non-profit professional to  execute the vision of the Board of Trustees and serve as a trusted partner with our Rabbi, educators, and lay leadership.  

 

The ideal candidate will possess proven business operation skills, timely and accurate reporting, excellent interpersonal relations, peerless integrity and a passion for creating a safe, welcoming and relationship-centered environment for members and visitors. 

 

 

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for leadership and oversight of non-clergy staff in  administration, finance, communications, community engagement, member relations, philanthropy and security. We expect that the ED will be a thoughtful and full participant in building and executing the Board’s long-term strategy while holding overall responsibility for the daily operations of the Temple. Cooperation, involvement and engagement with the Board of Trustees, liturgical staff, congregation members and community is critical for this position.  

 

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Trustees and maintains an equal and cooperative partnership with the Rabbi in decisions and management. Personable, flexible and able to maintain cordial relations with diverse stakeholders, the Director works with the Board, staff, committees, congregation members, volunteers, contractors, tenants, and visitors.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES

• Establish and maintain the smooth, safe, secure, and efficient operation of the synagogue on a day-to-day basis. 

• Supervise the staff including, but not limited, to the School of Jewish Studies Director, Facilities Manager, and the Administrative Assistant. 

• Manage third-party contracts and independent contractors. 

• Manage tenant relations including, but not limited to, leases, issues management, direct maintenance and scheduling. 

• Champion, grow, and sustain a highly engaged and committed Temple membership and community. 

• Ensure financial systems are maintained and improved, manage the annual budget and approve expenditures with the goal of financial health and long-term sustainability of the Temple’s resources. 

• This is an on-site and on-call position with fixed and flexible hours. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

• Five years of senior management experience in a synagogue, membership organization, nonprofit, or similar setting preferred. 

• Commitment to excellence and integrity, accountability, collaboration, innovation, respect,  trust, confidentiality. 

• Excellent organizational and time management skills, able to set, pursue and meet  priorities, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. 

• Strategic thinker who can lead at the ground level from a strong business operations perspective. 

• Demonstrated people management skills, able to build cohesive teams, delegate effectively, and “manage up.” Strong human resources/personnel experience. 

• Grace and professionalism under pressure in working with and facilitating collaboration with diversified membership, volunteer, staff, and outside resources. 

• Creativity in problem-solving and the ability to find innovative solutions.

• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey information  clearly and inspire trust. 

• Ability to use the internet and proficiency w/ Microsoft Office applications.

• Knowledge of Jewish values, rituals, holidays, customs, traditions, and practices preferred  but not required. 

 

BENEFITS 

This is a full-time exempt position providing competitive salary (range of $80,000 to $90,000), paid health insurance, paid PTO and other benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and education level.
