OVERVIEW

Temple Emanu-El is a vibrant and welcoming congregation located at 2550 Pali Highway, Honolulu. We provide a meaningful and engaging space for our community to gather, worship, and celebrate. Our Reform Judaism temple is a hub of religious, educational and social activities, and we are committed to maintaining a well-functioning facility that supports many diverse programs and initiatives. Our 1.5-acre property opened in 1960 and consists of a sanctuary, social hall, stage, library, kitchen, offices, gift shop, storage areas, parking lot, and the adjacent two-story Weinberg Learning Center. There are currently four tenants who rent space on the campus.

 

We are seeking an organized, experienced and skilled full-time Facilities Manager to maintain and improve our buildings and grounds. The ideal candidate will possess basic carpentry, masonry, painting, roofing, plumbing, electrical repairs, cleaning and maintenance abilities. The Facilities Manager should have excellent technical abilities, strong interpersonal relations and a passion for creating a safe, comfortable, and inviting environment for members and visitors.

 

Job Description – Facilities Manager

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Facilities Manager is responsible for the physical campus and its upkeep, repair and renovation, as appropriate. Duties include day-to-day handyperson and cleaning tasks, building and grounds maintenance and security functions on-site in accordance with the goals and policies established by the Board of Trustees.

 

The Facilities Manager reports to the Executive Director and is an integral member of the staff team. Personable, flexible and able to maintain cordial interpersonal relations with diverse stakeholders, the Facilities Manager works directly with clergy, staff colleagues, tenants, volunteers, contractors, congregational members and visitors. The Facilities Manager serves as an emergency contact for facility and security issues.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Perform and/or oversee and manage all aspects of facility maintenance and general repairs, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, landscape-related care and general cleaning to ensure the safety and functionality of the buildings and grounds.
  • Manage all aspects of opening and lock-up of the facility, including security gate.
  • Coordinate and supervise contractors and service providers for professional maintenance and repairs beyond regular scope of work as needed.
  • Work directly with the Executive Director and other staff members and volunteers to ensure the facility is prepared for various events and activities.
  • Provide support and assistance to congregants and visitors every Friday for Shabbat services, special events and as needed, addressing set-up, break-down and cleaning of tables, chairs, other facility-related equipment, kitchen, floors, and trash removal.
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment for building, grounds and kitchen, and be responsible for the procurement process.
  • Oversee the security systems and protocols to ensure the safety of the premises and its occupants.
  • Implement and enforce safety, security and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including those related to fire safety, sanitation and building codes.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to ensure the ongoing integrity and cleanliness of the facility.
  • Maintain a monthly and annual schedule of required equipment inspections
  • Monitor facility maintenance costs, based on annual budget and make recommendations for improvements.
  • This is an on-site and on-call position with some fixed and some flexible hours.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years of experience in facility management, building operations, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of building systems, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and security.
  • Experience with and knowledge of hand tools and power tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform basic carpentry, masonry, painting, roofing, plumbing, and electrical repairs and maintenance.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds unassisted and climb ladders.
  • Familiarity with applicable Hawai‘i safety regulations and codes.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • A demonstrated commitment to excellence and professionalism, accountability, collaboration, innovation, respect, trust, confidentiality.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively to find innovative solutions.
  • Effective English language communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with diversified membership, volunteer, staff, and outside resources.
  • Ability to use the internet and proficiency w/ Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of audio/visual equipment preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of Jewish customs, traditions, and practices preferred but not required.

 

BENEFITS

The salary available for the position is up to $50,000 and includes a generous benefits package including but not limited to an employer-paid health plan, 20 days of paid time off upon hire, free parking, and observance of most Federal holidays.
