SJS Curricular Topics
Due to the on-going Covid-19 pandemic, SJS will be meeting virtually at least through the fall semester. SJS is our Sunday learning experience for Kindergarten-8th grade. Beginning at 10:00 A.M. and ending at 11:00 A.M., learners will have an opportunity to “do Jewish” through an array of interactive learning opportunities. SJS is designed to expose learners to various components essential to the formation of a strong Jewish identity. Each grade level has a core, age appropriate themes for the educational year.
Bonim - Grades K-2:
- Building Community facilitating each student making connections with their classmates
- Introduction to Hebrew letters/vowels
- Becoming familiar with ritual items/symbols for Shabbat and other holidays
- Beginning to form a concept of God
- Preparation for performances at the Temple Sisterhood Craft Fair and our SJS showcase
Gesher - Grades 3-5:
- Building Community facilitating each student making connections with their classmates
- Review of Hebrew letters/vowels and working on decoding skills
- Bible stories to know
- Life Cycle events including Brit Milah, Simchat Bat, Namings, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Weddings, Burials and Conversions
- Israel: Our Jewish Home
- Preparation for performances at the Temple Sisterhood Craft Fair and our SJS showcase
Avodah - Grades 6-8:
- Building Community facilitating each student making connections with their classmates
- Living Middot (Jewish Values)
- From Shoah to Statehood: The Holocaust and the Modern State of Israel
- Preparation for class-led Shabbat Service, the Temple Sisterhood Craft Fair and our SJS showcase
